Midshipman fish floating on a bed of phalloidin-labeled hair cells. Artistic license judiciously taken!
We just published a paper in the Journal of Experimental Biology showing that the seasonal, breeding-associated increase in saccular hair cells in female plainfin midshipman fish is likely due to increased cell proliferation during the summer breeding season. Congratulations to former PhD student Dr. Coty Jasper, former undergraduates Olivia Molano and Forrest Fearington, and collaborator Dr. Joseph Sisneros for their hard work on this NSF-funded project.
